The are several innovation of biometrics that have been implemented by the Malaysian government into the management system in Malaysia such as:
1. MyKAD
2. Malaysian Electronic Passport
3. i-KAD

  • It was first introduced by the Malaysia National Registration Department of Malaysia on 5th September 2001.
  • Compulsory identification card for Malaysia citizens above the age of 12.
  • Introduced as a replacement for the High Quality Identity Card.
  • The Etymology of “MyKAD” compose of two words that are My and KAD. The word “My” refers to ISO3166-1 alpha-2 code for Malaysia, while the word of “KAD” comes from the malay language which is the acronym for “Kad Akuan Diri” or “Kad Aplikasi Digital”.
  • Considered as one of the four Multimedia Science Communication (MSC) Malaysia flagship
  • There are various application of MyKAD in Malaysia and examples are shown below:

  • Introduced in 1998.
  • Embedded with 8Kbytes chip on the back cover of the passport.
  • The chip has written a design that encode several informations in one data chip which can be seen below:

  • The life span of the chip is around 10 years.
  • In 2003, the Malaysian Electronic Passport was implemented with a thumbprint biometric template replacing thumbprint image.
  • The passport still maintain 8Kbytes chip that embedded in passport but undergoes several changes. This includes the changes of the chip design or mechanism which is segmented into several areas for recording specified number of travelling information.

i-Kad

  • i-Kad was introduced for the management and monitoring of immigrants coming into Malaysia.
  • It was introduced by Datuk Zahid Hamidi the Home Affairs Minister.
  • This i-Kad will be use by the end of the 2014 where it will be issued in stages according to sectors which is entitled with different colour coding. The i-Kad will be embedded with a high-tech chip that stores all information regarding the immigrants including:
    1. Barcode that ease the job of law enforcement officers to asses the worker details by using
    smartphones.
    2. Biometric information system.
    3. Biometric fingerprints.
    4. Color coding based on Employment Sector.

Fingerprint Biometric Time-Clock

  • Used in many government and private institution.
  • It was used to replace the old method that use attendance clock. This attendance clock will punch time and date once the card is inserted into the attendance clock.
  • The innovation of the biometric fingerprints time-clock is the most trusted mechanism when compared to the old mechanism whereby it will record  in real time once the workers put their fingerprints on biometric fingerprint scanner. Hence, workers can’t cheat their attendance.
